The Therapeutic Recreation Process is a systematic way of delivering the proper intervention necessary for a client to meet their needs. APIE is an acronym for Assessment, Plan, Implement and Evaluate. These four phases of intervention are what are used when working with clients in Recreation Therapy. Initially the assessment is done to see where the client is at, establish their strengths and weaknesses and to establish a base line of needs in order to work with. Planning then incorporates the use of recreation or leisure activities that will help to meet the needs of the client. Planning can include goal setting as well. Implementing the plan is the next phase and this is when all the work is done mutually for the benefit of the client. Tasks can be monitored carefully in this phase. Evaluation involves the summing up it all. Whether the client was successful in meeting their needs or accomplishing their goals can be determined. A thorough evaluation would dictate whether a client may have to continue at the same level of competancy or advance to another level of competancy. This would then involve another assessment or reassessment and the entire cycle happens all over again.
Well this is all new to me. I've never taken an online course before nor have I done a blog before so I hope I do ok. I am currently working at the VA Hospital in Phoenix. I work in the housekeeping department and my assigned area of the hospital is the Out Patient Mental Health Clinic (Jade/Opal). I have been working here for 3 months now and I find it very rewarding. I work directly with the Recreation Therapy department as well. This week I told everyone about my classes and they are more than willing to help me with whatever assignments that I have to do. My interview will be with the Recreation Therapy Department Supervisor, Lynn Hambel and I will be doing my Service Learning Experience with the Recreation Therapists in the Community Learning Center or Nursing Home of the VA Hospital. They are all a wonderful team to be working with and I am very honored to be able to work with them.
